(Surrounding areas and activities of interest are almost too numerous to mention. Included further on will be additional information and links to these places.)
Cedar Island, located at the northeastern tip of the down east peninsula, is the mainland terminus of Highway 12. Here folks can board one of the state supported ferries for the two-hour ride across Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke Island, where the Outer Banks leg of Highway 12 begins. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge, which is a well-preserved tidewater ecosystem encompassing thousands of acres of marshlands and pine hammocks as well as hundreds of species of wildlife.
Visitors can also get a unique glimpse of the area by horseback. The Outer Banks Riding Stables provide guided tours, and no experience is necessary. Horse/Rider combinations are chosen according to ability. Kayaking has also become popular, and those who have taken advantage of this return time and time again.
The High Tide accent is native to this area. This dialect comes from the Old English that was once spoken in Carolina in colonial times. Along with the famous southern drawl, it is native to the lowland regions of the Carolinas. The legend here tells that Cedar Island is related to the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Local history buffs believe that Cedar Island was where the colonists actually put down roots and not further north on Roanoke Island as some believe.
There are campground facilities for those who are a little more adventurous, or visitors can enjoy their night's stay at the Driftwood Motel. All who come through must not fail to enjoy some of the best and tastiest seafood on the Atlantic Coast at the Driftwood Restaurant, adjacent to the motel. The home made chowders and soups are fantastic!
